I came across this Safe Space after being assaulted by a man I thought I was going to marry. I was in denial partly, but in my core I was feeling so much pain. I went back and forth about attending one of their support group meetings. Nervous partly to acknowledge it and partly afraid of being judged. I didn’t have the most supportive women or people in my life. It was virtual, so I figured worst case worst I could just close my laptop or cut my computer off. These women were nowhere near judgmental. They gave me the option of just listening or speaking. They didn’t mind if I cut my camera on or not. I watched is these women shared their stories of triumph and their current battles. Some dealing with new situations, some triggers from old. I watched as they supported each other in the way the other desired: be it advise, finding resources, or just allowing a safe space to vent. When I finally decided to speak the overwhelming amount of love I was met with seemed unreal. The support even in between meetings with tips and just empathetic ears of some of the legal things I am walking through still. Safe Space is filled with big hearts and they know how to laugh and have a good time. At the meetings there’s crying, laughing, frustration, forward-thinking, but most importantly unbiased support…Safe Space continuously shows me it’s possible to thrive after even some of the most horrendous things, and trauma is something I’m no stranger too. I lived in survival mode until then. Yes, THRIVE, a word I never saw in my vocabulary seriously to describe my life before Safe Space.
