I understand public defenders have a lot going on and maybe even prioritize cases.
However, I also believe they should be for the people. We need people who really care about others and their job not just the money.
I have been helping with a case and there is a lot of miscommunication with the secretaries and public defenders. I try to speak to a public defender and he does not answer messages or replies to emails even when I am given instructions on contacting him for help.
I just want to raise a voice for real justice for those people who truly need help.
They should be allowed to choose a public defender or at least be able to have communication with them when needed and not when the public defender feels is necessary based upon his own deadlines.

The Merced County Public Defenders office is just awesome. Deputy Public Defender, Mark Johnson, represented my friend who was looking at time in state prison. However, Mr. Johnson went above and beyond for him, fought for him, and helped him have a second chance so he is home with his family now. Mr. Johnson is one of the best attorneys this office has. Thank you for all your hard work! 👏

The paralegal lady there will not help understand the documents, she will not help fill papers out. She is not knowledgable of the documents. 0 stars for her. She will not return phone calls She has no knowledge of her job.

Called and left messages about getting expungement 3 times in 3 months no call backs and no answer once transfered unprofessional and unexceptable from a county building.... this place needs an overhaul and new people in charge that's organized and gets things done.

I can only contact my public defender on Wed/Thurs from 1-4:30pm. I have been calling sense 1pm, was on hold for 30 min, just for the lady to tell me to call back in 15 min, I did that he still wasn't available, instead she sent me to his voicemail but he does not return calls which is what the lady told me. I then called back and was hung up on! Called again and wax told to call back in 15 min. Been getting the run around and the ladies that answer the phone are extremely rude and unprofessional. I'll be sure to report them.
