Before booking this therapist, it would be helpful for others to know that she kept trying to phase me out of care despite my insisting I still needed services. More than once she didn’t fulfill her verbalized duty to return communication and it was difficult to book appointments. The most harmful offense was when she didn’t schedule me/follow up like she said, then abandoned me in crisis and never booked me again after telling her what a dangerous situation I was in. I was never phased out nor provided any structure—going against the legal document clients sign about the therapy process. I wasn’t provided an alternate therapist either—just abandoned after revealing to her I was fleeing an abusive situation.

Additionally, I don’t need to hear about how my therapist might get a divorce one day due to her husband’s narcissistic tendencies, leading me to feel I have to keep my therapist’s secrets.

Her therapy was damaging and frankly qualifies for losing one’s license. Sometimes I reflect on how differently certain things would have been for me if she had fulfilled the legal requirements of her job. It concerns me that she is the point person for the entire county when it comes to supporting survivors of assault and violence, yet this is how I was treated. I’m still recovering from this therapist’s damage over several years later.

Therapy clients shouldn’t have to beg their therapist to accept that the client understands their own needs for frequency of treatment. Clients should be trusted to know themselves and if they say they still need therapy—they still need therapy. If the therapist is unwilling to continue services, they are required to phase you out and help you find a new therapist. Client abandonment is illegal and counts as malpractice; I’m still dealing with the harm in multiple facets of my life, and my quality of life has diminished long term as a result of this therapist’s care.
