I drove down from Denver on 6/29/2024. It wasn’t busy at all. The visitors center has lots of fossils on display in the museum. They also had several out that you could pick up and touch. The rangers were very friendly and offered lots of information about the park and area.

The fossilized redwood stumps were quite interesting to see. The trails were easy to walk. Make sure to take a hat/sunscreen/bug spray. You are exposed with no tree cover for a good part of the walk.

This is a fabulous national historic park. One of the richest fossil sites in the world. 50,000 of their specimens are in museums around the world. The visitor center is informative, the rangers knowledgeable. There are several trails. We learned all about the geology of the area, the discovery and exploitation of the site, and its preservation. Research is ongoing. If coming in summer, be ready for bright sunshine.

We had this on our list to visit. The visitor center has a great museum and the staff is so nice and helpful. It was really windy the day we went, so we hiked the petrified forest loop and went to the homestead. The trail was easy to hike. It is a definite must to go visit. You do have to be of the property by 4:30 when they lock the gates.

We parked at the Hornbek Homestead because the park is closed for winter hours still on Sunday. We hiked 7.1 miles and the trails are easy and well marked. April 13th and there were still spots with a foot of snow on the trail. A park pass is required.
