It was 1992. I was 19, and had recently graduated from Oak Ridge High. My parents and I had arrived from Argentina ten years earlier. I was a dreamer without documentation. After being turned down for the US military for being an “undocumented alien”, after being turned away from universities because I didn’t have a social security number, and after being denied access to jobs, loans, and bank accounts, I decided to walk into the local INS office to plead my case. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was frustrated, lost, and desperate for someone to listen to me. I already knew how to become naturalized. The attorneys had told me. All I needed was to get married or make a child with someone. As a 19 yo with no future, I rejected both of these stupid ideas. So, with nothing but a story and a slight attitude, I walked right into the INS office. A gentleman greeted me. He was in his 40’s. I immediately went into my case. “Listen here mister. I’ve been here for a decade! I’ve learned the language, and I’ve assimilated. I want an opportunity like everyone else. I can’t keep living like this. It’s not fair.. etc..” (he seemed interested in what I was saying, but he kept looking at his watch). He finally interrupted me after a good while. He said he understood where I was coming from. “However” he said, “This is a field office. My team and I look for undocumented immigrants like you and we deport them immediately. You need an attorney. We can’t help you here. In fact, you see these desks?” (They were empty) Yes sir, I do see them. “Well, when my colleagues return from lunch, we’re going to detain you and deport you. So, I suggest you leave now and never come back”. He was serious at this point. I took his advice and waited another ten difficult years until I found the woman for me. In 2023 we will celebrate 22 years of marriage, 2 beautiful American children, my ten years of US Citizenship ?, and multiple successful businesses. I want to offer 5 stars (better late than never) and a ton of love to that gentleman who listened, and gave me the chance I came here to ask for. I don’t know his name, but I wanted to share our story. Thank you so very much ?♥️?
