Georgia Legal Services: A Comprehensive Overview

Georgia Legal Services (GLS) is a vital non-profit legal organization dedicated to providing legal assistance to low-income Georgians. Established to address the significant disparity in access to justice, GLS operates as a cornerstone within the state’s legal aid community. The organization focuses on ensuring that vulnerable populations have the opportunity to navigate the legal system effectively and protect their rights.

Location and Contact Information

GLS’s primary location is situated at 104 Marietta St NW #240, Atlanta, GA 30303. For immediate contact, individuals can utilize their dedicated phone line: Phone: 4048947707. A wealth of information regarding their services, eligibility criteria, and program details can be accessed through their official website: Website: glsp.org. The organization operates with a commitment to accessibility, offering a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot, demonstrating their dedication to serving a diverse clientele.

Specialties and Services

GLS specializes in a broad range of legal services, primarily targeting individuals and families facing economic hardship. Their areas of expertise typically include, but are not limited to:

  • Housing Law
  • Family Law (Divorce, Child Custody)
  • Consumer Law
  • Public Benefits (Access to Social Security, Medicaid)
  • Debt Collection Defense

It’s important to note that GLS operates on a sliding fee scale, ensuring that services are available regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. They prioritize cases with the greatest need and often collaborate with other legal aid organizations to maximize their impact.

Client Feedback and Considerations

Georgia Legal Services maintains an active presence on Google My Business, with 49 reviews offering insights into the experiences of past clients. While the average opinion is 3.1/5, suggesting areas for improvement, the volume of reviews indicates a significant level of engagement. It appears the organization’s success hinges heavily on the individual attorney assigned to a case, as some feedback highlights inconsistencies in legal advice and strategic representation. Careful consideration should be given to discussing expectations and desired outcomes thoroughly with the assigned attorney.

Additional Points of Interest

Beyond their physical location and accessibility features, GLS emphasizes a commitment to client empowerment and education. They strive to provide not just legal assistance, but also the knowledge and resources necessary for clients to navigate their legal situations independently. The organization continuously seeks to refine its processes and enhance the quality of service offered.

Concluding Recommendation

Georgia Legal Services presents itself as a valuable resource for low-income Georgians seeking legal guidance. While some past experiences suggest potential variations in the quality of representation, the organization’s commitment to accessibility and its broad range of services are commendable. For anyone exploring their options, we strongly recommend visiting the glsp.org website to explore their specific programs, eligibility requirements, and to ultimately connect with an attorney to discuss your individual legal needs. Contacting them directly through their website is the most effective way to initiate the process and determine if GLS can assist you.

At first I was really pleased and thought I had suitable representation but the attorney I received Vicki Wiggins tell me some things that weren't true before and after court. And she didn't file an appeal on the Judgment in my behalf after she was requested to. Now I have another attorney on a new civil case and we'll see how that goes.

Recently, and in transparency, I called Georgia Legal Aid to receive guidance and assistance on how to retrieve information regarding my mother and her abuse towards myself and sister as minors. I am an adult now. I no longer live in Georgia; I live in North Carolina.

The GA Legal Aid representative I spoke to was rude, short, and unintelligible. She told me that "I needed a referral from NC Legal Aid in order to receive services from them". On 07/18, I spoke to a NC Legal Aid representative and shared with her what GA told me and the NC representative said, "Bless your heart. Ma'am, you don't need a referral from us. If you wish to retrieve certain documents, you just need to either go to the county's clerk of office, or call them with your request, and start from there".

I felt duped.

What GA doesn't know is that there are children that could possibly be in danger and with my mother being a former Fulton County Government employee, I am unsure what and who she knows to aid her in her socio-pathetic, and abusive ways. My mother spent over and beyond a decade in various departments of Fulton County and beyond. She has built her social facade to be impenetrable and is trying her absolute hardest to keep me quiet because I have found the voices she stripped from me as a child.

As a former Atlanta resident, this is beyond disappointing.

Many people of my city need the assistance of GA Legal Aid and the last thing we need are people who consider Legal Aid as "as a paycheck" rather than "an opportunity to change the lives of others". You all never know - the smallest detail and/or bit of information could be the missing detail that most people need.

I called twice and never got an answer. First time, I left my information but never got a call back. The second time there was about a 1 hour wait on que. I could opt to have them call back and "you won't lose your place on que" but over 3 hours later... nada. Should change your name to Georgia LACK of legal services.

I contacted this company for assistance through The Georgia Rental Assistance Program(GRA). My experience has been beyond horrible and there is no rectifying it. First I want to say that some of the women whom work for the intake department are severely rude. Im a customer so when you’re assisting a customer your customer service should be welcoming, showing compassion, and sympathizing with the customers concerns. Not talking over them and being rude and having an ugly attitude. Secondly the navigators take their precious time to reach back out to you in regards to your application. Due to their lack of remorse and communication, your court date comes and no payment has been issued or communication of when the payment will be issued causing you to be evicted. It’s almost like they want you to blow their phones up constantly to try to reach someone. I felt like a nuisance for 3 weeks trying to get ahold of someone. I fell short one month and only needed a little help and never received it. Have a plan b set in place when trying to receive any assistance from this program because you don’t want to end up like me.

Called for information regarding a small claim with my ex employer and the woman "Tina" was rude from the beginning. I couldnt say anything without getting cut off and she hung up on me. Provided little to no information and the most imporrant thing on her mind was the county i live in so she can decide whether to help me or not. Terrible
